Brake Pad Bedding Is Essential for Maximum Braking Performance
Installing new brake pads is one of the best upgrades you can make to improve your vehicle's braking performance. Whether you've chosen OEM replacement pads or high performance compounds for spirited street driving or track use, one step is often overlooked: the brake pad bedding procedure.
At XIII Motorsports, we know that simply installing brake pads isn't enough. Proper preparation, careful installation, and correctly bedding the pads are all critical to achieving maximum stopping power, consistent brake feel, and long service life.
Why We Recommend Hawk Performance Brake Pads
At XIII Motorsports, we've installed brake pads on everything from daily driven cars, tow rigs, classic cars to dedicated track vehicles. Time and time again, Hawk Performance Brake Pads have proven to be one of our go to recommendations for customers looking to improve braking confidence.
Hawk offers a wide range of friction compounds to suit virtually every driving style, from long lasting and quiet pads, to low dust street pads, to aggressive compounds designed for autocross and endurance racing. Their consistent pedal feel, excellent stopping power, and proven durability have made them a favorite among enthusiasts and professional drivers alike.
Like any premium brake pad, however, Hawk pads perform at their best when they're installed correctly and properly bedded to the brake rotors.
What Is Brake Pad Bedding?
Brake pad bedding, also known as the brake pad break in procedure, is the process of transferring an even layer of friction material onto the surface of the brake rotor.
This transfer layer allows the brake pad and rotor to work together as a matched pair, creating the friction needed for smooth, predictable, and repeatable braking.
Many premium performance brake pads are thermally treated during manufacturing. This process heats the friction material to simulate an initial bedding cycle and helps stabilize the pad material. While this improves consistency, it does not eliminate the need to properly bed new brake pads once they're installed on your vehicle.
Why Is the Bedding Procedure So Important?
Properly bedding your brake pads creates a uniform transfer layer on the rotor surface, allowing the braking system to perform exactly as designed.
Correct brake pad bedding provides:
-
Stronger and more consistent braking performance
-
Improved pedal feel
-
Reduced brake vibration and judder
-
Less brake squeal and noise
-
Longer brake pad and rotor life
-
Better performance during repeated hard braking
Skipping this step can result in uneven friction deposits on the rotor, inconsistent braking, and premature wear.
The Proper Brake Pad Bedding Procedure
While every brake manufacturer has slightly different recommendations, the goal is always the same: gradually build heat into the brake system while creating an even transfer layer between the pad and rotor.
Step 1: Build Heat Gradually
Perform several controlled stops from progressively higher speeds while gradually increasing brake pedal pressure. You'll typically notice braking performance improving with each stop.
Step 2: Complete Multiple Heat Cycles
Continue with six to ten progressively harder braking applications. If your brake rotors previously used a different brake pad compound, additional cycles may be necessary to fully establish a new transfer layer.
Step 3: Establish the Transfer Layer
Continue driving while performing controlled braking applications to completely remove any previous friction material and create an even layer from the new brake pads.
Step 4: Allow the Brakes to Cool
After the bedding procedure is complete, drive without heavy braking whenever possible to allow the brake rotors and pads to cool naturally. Allowing the rotors to cool close to ambient temperature improves both rotor life and long term braking performance.
Step 5: Return to Normal Operating Temperature
Once cooled, your brake pads can be brought back up to operating temperature during normal driving. At this point, the pads are fully bedded and ready to deliver consistent braking performance.
The XIII Motorsports Difference
Installing brake pads isn't simply about replacing worn components. It's about ensuring every part of the braking system works together.
Every brake service performed at XIII Motorsports includes:
-
Complete brake system inspection
-
Rotor condition evaluation
-
Cleaning all pad contact surfaces
-
Lubricating necessary hardware
-
Inspecting caliper operation
-
